The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the dept. maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the dept. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the dept. from ca. 1920 to 1981. This artificial series consists of newspaper clippings of the regular feature column by C. M. Stanley. Longtime newspaper editor Cassius Miller Stanley was born 1878 Sept. 9 in Jeffersonville, Ill., to Judge Isaac Henry and Mary Frances Trussell Stanley. He graduated with a degree in pharmacy from Illinois College. In 1901 Stanley moved to Ala. where he began his journalism career at the Birmingham Age-Herald. He married Martha Cousins Greet of Huntsville on 1905 Dec. 7. Greet was the great granddaughter of Thomas Bibb, Alabama's second governor. By 1910 "Cash" Stanley had become the managing editor of the Age-Herald, a position he retained until 1927 when he moved to Montgomery to be the editor of the Alabama Journal. Stanley began writing a Sunday column for the Journal in 1947 Dec. In part his column was an outlet for the vast amount of Alabama historical lore he had gathered over the years. He contributed numerous feature articles on Alabama history and biography. Stanley was also the author of the Alabama section of Men of the South and was coauthor of The Southerner. After his retirement in 1962 he continued his column for two more years as "Editor Emeritus." Stanley suffered a stroke in his newspaper office in 1964 Oct. He died on Nov. 5 at the age of 86.
